Filmed and edited during August and September 2007, using non-professional cameras and basic edition software, Chile: Public Works 1997-2007 is an effort to present three different threads into one single product:
Interviews with two contemporary Chilean architectural practices.
Presentation of five works built in Chile between 1997 and 2007.
A critical discourse.

Intuition is our best tool.

First part of the interview to Jean Philippe Vassal [1954-], principal of Lacaton & Vassal with Anne Lacaton [1955], founded in 1987.

Vassal is French, but was born in Casablanca [Morocco]. He lived and worked from 1980 to 1985 in Africa as architect and urban planner. Since then, Africa has strongly influenced the work of Lacaton & Vassal.

The question of the money is not to work with less money, it is to do the maximum with the money you have. If you have a lot of money you can do more and more.

Jean Philippe Vassal

For Lacaton & Vassal the architectural potencial of technology lies not in its origins or original definition but in its potencial to be reprogrammed and combined with other things.

Andreas & Ilka Ruby

In this first part, Vassal speaks about the current state of the discipline [architecture / urbanism], the Africa’s lessons, the space for everybody and the Plus’ transformation concept. All linked with operations of economy and the importance of thinking.

In 2008, this practice won the Grand Prix National d’Architecture, France.

Interview to chinese architect Wang Shu [1963 - ], co-director of Amateur Architecture Studio, who’s work was first introduced to western circles by designing the Chinese Pavilion for 2006’s Venice Biennale.

Until recently, he’s been the director of the Architecture Department in China Academy of Art,
one of the only chinese architecture schools inside a Fine Arts academy.
Currently, he’s performing as jury and external consultant for the Ordos100 project.

Wang Shu is part of the first generation of architects educated after the economic reforms
led by Deng Xiaoping in the end of the 1970’s. In this interview, Wang describes how things have changed from 1980’s and how things should be done in educating future architects.
